The Celtic Cross is one of the symbols that is most commonly associated with Ireland.

The Christian monks of the seventh century adapted the ancient pagan Celtic art style to create new insular art forms for this new religion in the form of  highly decorated carved stone high crosses and elaborate illuminated manuscripts.

The Book of Kells is an 8th century illuminated manuscript considered to be the pinnacle of Irish insular art. The pages, which are made from vellum(calfskin), are  meticulously decorated in miniscule flowing Celtic design and calligraphy. This has been an inspiration for John's work and the images contain his original Cross designs that go some way in acknowledging the great practitioners of this ancient art.
