Celtic Art is a term used to cover a large swath of a style that uses knotwork, spirals, key patterns, lettering, zoomorphics, plant forms and human figures.

This painting is another in an ongoing series that John, as an artist endeavours to create his own collection of designs, having taken inspiration from those who have gone before. in particular the artist’s who created The Book of Kells - an 8th century illuminated manuscript considered to be the pinnacle of Irish insular art.

The pages, which are made from vellum(calfskin), are  meticulously decorated in minuscule flowing Celtic design and calligraphy.

The Cross forms part of the complex of an ancient monastic site that flourished in the sixth century.

This is one of the tallest stone crosses in Ireland with a height of 4 metres and has carvings on both the West and East faces. Within the complex there is a church that was in use until 1827. A beautifully carved Grave slab lies within its walls.

Celtic Art Prints  : The Sacred heart of Jesus :

A4 size - 210mm x 297 mm /8.267 inches x 11.692 inches.

The Sacred heart of jesus

The Sacred Heart symbolises the physical heart of Jesus Christ representing his divine love for humanity. The painting is in the style of a stained glass window laid out in panels each telling symbols related to the life of Jesus.

Eagle of St. John the Evangelist - he is symbolically represented by an eagle in many illuminated manuscripts, a metaphor for the heights to which he rises in the first chapter of his Gospel.

The Chalice and Host represent the Last Supper.

The Three Crosses on the hill of Calvary, (also known as Golgotha - the place of the skull) represent the crucifixion of Jesus.

The Dove - the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in the form of a dove during his baptism.

IHS Symbol  - It is believed that this stands for the Latin phrase Iesus Hominum Salvator, “Jesus the Saviour of  all ”.

Pelican Symbol -A legend predating Christianity told that the mother pelican pierced her breast and  fed her dying young with her blood to revive them from death, but in turn lost her own life.

The early Christians adapted the Pelican to symbolizes the sacrifice of Christ on the cross (because he gave his blood for others) as well as the Eucharist (because it represents Christ’s blood and provides spiritual nourishment).

Lion Heads - It was believed that young lions are born dead, but come to life three days after birth when breathed upon by their sire, the lion has become associated with the Resurrection, and this is why it is sometimes used as the symbol of Christ.
